Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield
This is a Volunteer position.
Position: Coach/Mentor
Hot Shots is a program for boys and girls ages 2-6 dedicated to building their self-esteem, parental bonds, athletic and artistic skills, and love of reading, using soccer, art, music, dance, and drumming as the vehicles and including 100% parent participation.
In every activity, we use non-traditional activities to engage the kids’ imaginations and provide joy, such as squirt-gun soccer, polar bear sculpture, and story times. Children also do “public speaking”, introducing themselves to the group of about 40 kids and grown-ups by answering four questions: Favorite food, color, animal, and “What makes you special?”
Hot Shots is radically different from your average volunteer opportunity, too, with an extraordinarily high number of extraordinary benefits, including:
- Making dozens of little children happy every Sunday
- Earning lots of community service hours while having fun
- Gaining management experience as you move up in the Hot Shots organization
- Developing close relationships with kids who will look up to you as mentors
- Learning how to deal with crisis situations
- Collecting a college scholarship when you graduate
- Building the self-esteem of little kids at a formative stage in their lives
- Getting great letters of recommendation for jobs and college applications
- Learning public speaking as part of running the weekly sessions
- Becoming part of a tight-knit team of young people giving back to their community
- Getting highly-paid babysitting jobs
More than 300 middle- and high school students have coached for Hot Shots since 1996. We’ve awarded more than $13,000 in scholarships, and written hundreds of recommendation letters.
This is a chance to make a difference, not just check off the community service box for your college applications. Through your empathic coaching and mentorinf, you will build a child’s self-esteem foundation one brick at a time, so eventually they will have the strength to deal with the challenges life throws at them as they progress through elementary and, especially, middle school.
