ARE YOU INTERESTED IN MARINE SCIENCE, ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, SUSTAINABILITY, DATA ENGINEERING, TECHNOLOGY, OR BLUE SPACE MARKETING?
SMELTS.org in Plymouth is a 501c3 nonprofit committed to work in protecting marine mammals and other at-risk marine life using new and innovative technologies to reduce the negative effect of humans in the ocean. SMELTS priority is to eliminate the bycatch of the North Atlantic right whale in trap/pot and gillnet fisheries using SMELTS ropeless/on-demand technology. Coming Summer 2024 SMELTS will offer internships and paid positions in technology assembly, data collection, technology testing, filmmaking, website development, and graphic design in their Plymouth location.
SMELTS’ other role is to collaborate with fishers, NGO’s, federal and state agencies for movement forward with a common goal of protecting the North Atlantic right whale and other marine life from becoming entangled in fishing lines. The survival of the right whale is critical. Whales play a crucial role in moving nutrients throughout the ocean zones (whale pump). This process is crucial to other marine life and climate resiliency for the planet. More whales impact our economy by providing whale watching, adding to a vibrant working waterfront with local ice cream shops, restaurants, hotels and local businesses. Protecting the earth’s “Blue Space” will be one of the greatest accomplishments of the 21st century.
Students interested in SMELTS can apply at admin@duxburystudentunion.org and will receive information to attend a dockside informational meeting in mid-June (date TBD).
